Eleven years after the
General Act on Equal Treatment has been passed and twenty-three years after the
modification of the German constitution towards a substantial conception of
gender equality, the following questions are still pressing: Who is
discriminated by what? Who is equal in which respect and should be a
beneficiary of affirmative action? Who is given a public voice and can
participate in decision-making?
The conference
elaborates on these questions via methodically diverse panels, two keynotes and
one round table discussion. Its emphasis is on education broadly understood as
encompassing higher education, primary education, social work and political
education. Affirmative action measures are considered not only in respect to
inequalities of gender and disability. What is at stake is rather an integral
approach also addressing disadvantages of class, ethnicity and sexuality and
overcoming gender binarism.
Scientists/practitioners/activists
will present and discuss theoretical perspectives, recent research, practical
reflections as well as experiential narratives. Anti-discrimination and
affirmative action measures like, e.g., quotas will be considered from the
perspective of different theoretical approaches including intersectionality,
queer theory, diversity and a renewed philosophical egalitarianism. At the same
time the aim is to explore how practical and experiential knowledge can enrich
theory production. The focus will be on education in Thuringia while national as
well as global issues, policies and developments will also be taken into
account.
